What is it like to study in China?
Hi!
My name is Clara and I have been studying in China for a semester. I was studying in University of Nottingham Ningbo and I will try to provide some insight about life as a student in China.
- First, I want to make a disclaimer and that’s the fact that my university was an English university. So I never studied in Mandarin. However, I had to use mandarin a lot, because chinese citizens don’t understand english well. One of the most useful tips I can give is learning a bit of chinese in advance and download a translator app
- Depending in what city you live in, you will be offered different activities and plans. But there are some that are universal throughout China. Karaoke is one of them. You can always go to a karaoke with your friends, on a lazy evening or in a thrilling night. Another big plan is eating and shopping. In Ningbo there were some malls and a lot of chinese students would often go and have dinner or lunch and explore shops. Cinemas are also quite nice, and it’s always fun to watch a movie, even though you won’t understand anything
- If you live in a big city or nearby a big one, you can always go to concerts or theatres. It is very fun to watch concerts in China. It was a great experience for me. Museums are also very nice in big cities, Shanghai has a couple good ones.
- Get used to pay on your phone. Chinese people hardly ever use cash, as they have everything stored on their phones. Also get used to cameras around you. China has strict laws and big vigilance.
